The raffle proved as popular as ever, thanks to Leila’s imaginative presentation
Our 64th AGM began with attendees enjoying a glass of mulled wine or fruit juice, cheese straws and mince pies prior to the start of the meeting. Marion King (Chair) welcomed assembled Club members and the Committee introduced themselves, describing their various roles.
Chris Thornton-Clough, Club President thanked the Committee for their hard work this year that had enabled the Club to flourish both financially and in increased membership numbers. All this, at a time when several local Gardening Clubs have been forced to close.
No speech of our esteemed President would be complete without the customary parade of jokes and this time Chris excelled in horticultural humour. For example: How do you stop your dog from digging in the garden? Answer: Hide his spade (Ho Ho Ho!).
Marion could not compete with this barrage of witticisms, her own speech consisting of a summary of the year’s events. These included the January Party, outings to Exbury Gardens and RHS Wisley, two Special Interest Group events, visits to Newtimber Place and One Garden,Brighton and not forgetting our famous Plant Sale held at the end of May, that alone raised £1,500 for Club funds.
Votes of thanks were extended to Chris Thornton-Clough, Ken Norman (Vice President), Gerald Wicks (Accounts Examiner), Linda Church (Competitions table organiser) and Graham Dwyer (Website Editor) who were each presented with a bottle of wine.
Britt-Marie Karlsson was elected to join the Committee and Gerald Wicks resigned as Examiner of the Club acounts.
It was unanimously agreed to donate all proceeds from the January Party raffle ticket sales to One Garden, Brighton’s Palm House Appeal.
